La familia más prehistórica de la televisión cumple 50 años. The Flintstones, la serie creada por Hanna Barbera a principio de la década de los 60 del pasado siglo esta de cumpleaños. El buscador Google se puso de gala para tal fecha (30-septiembre 2010). Son 50 años de historia.

Hablar de Los Picapiedra es hablar de la primera serie de dibujos animados que irrumpió en la pequeña pantalla en horario prime time en septiembre de 1960. Al principio los viernes a las 20:30 h en la televisión americana. Se convirtieron además en los primeros dibujos animados en emitir en color ( apartir de 1962). También fue la primera serie animada en presentar artistas invitados de moda ( como ahora ocurre en Los Simpson).

The Flintstone o Los Picapiedra son la versión prehistórica de la familia Kramden protagonista de la popular serie de los 60, The Honeymooners. Narra la vida cotidiana de Los Picapiedra y sus vecinos Los Mármol en la ciudad de Rocadura (Bedrock en la original).

Las tramas y guiones pensadas, no solo para los niños, sino para todas las edades reflejando la clase media de la sociedad norteamericana, las maquinarias y aparatos electrodomésticos prehistóricos que imitaban la vida moderna y los diálogos pícaros hicieron de la serie un éxito total.

Oficialmente fueron 166 episodios los emitidos por televisión hasta 1966, fecha en la que comenzaron a redifundirse hasta la fecha. 2 películas han llevado a la pantalla grande con personajes reales sus hazañas Los Picapiedra (1994) y Los Picapiedra en Viva Rock Vegas (2000).
